Working from the kitchens of Hunley Hotel & Golf Club the participants, many of whom were meeting each other for just the second time, adopted a theme and displayed their talents.
To celebrate HRH Her Majesty The Queen’s Jubilee, they had to bake cakes and scones in 90 minutes and impress MFC Foundation judges, who themselves were set a task………to taste everything and pick a winner…….look, someone had to do it
The participants produced a Victoria sponge topped with strawberries, blueberries and cream in the design of the Union Flag. This was accompanied by similarly-topped fruit scones.
Another made chocolate brownies, with a side of strawberries, blueberries and cream, this came with cheese scones made with parmesan and mascarpone.
The winning entry was a multi-layered lemon drizzle cake, with home-made lemon curd, together with lemon infused fruit scones with home-made blackcurrant jam.
“I was so impressed with the standard,” said Chef Matei, a one time MasterChef the professional quarter-finalist.
“They had most of the baking done in an hour, leaving time for everything to cool and be decorated. All this in just our second week together.”
