A joint initiative between Middlesbrough Council, Middlesbrough Central Library and MFC Foundation has seen over 500 schoolchildren from around the area improve their reading and writing skills in a fun and friendly environment.
Throughout the week, pupils have been working with coaches from the Foundation in variously themed tasks, before taking a tour around the historic building, many for the first time.
The Reading Well initiative is closely aligned to the Primary Stars, Reading Stars and #iwill programmes, run by the club’s charitable arm.
Local author Rachael Wong enthralled children from Breckon Hill and Archibald Primary Schools when reading a chapter from her new book, Football Boots and Dancing Shoes, while the elected Mayor of Middlesbrough Andy Preston met with children from Ayresome and St Joseph’s Primary Schools.
BBC Tees presenter Gary Philipson and reporter Andy Bell came along on different days and spoke to everyone involved, recording the enthusiasm of everyone connected with the project.
A tour of an exhibition of Boro memorabilia on the ground floor was included as part of the campaign, as the young people of Teesside weaved their way through the library learning about the rich history of our wonderful area and finding out just what a valuable resource the library is.
