AS the school year draws to a close, youngsters across the region will be looking forward to their break and a for many a chance to enjoy the natural world.
Just like those from Richmond School and Sixth Form College who represented us in a #PLInspires competition which had the environment at heart recently.
Their idea was called Boot Plant, where football boots could be redistributed to those who maybe can’t afford them, with the unusable boots turned into planters for flowers with the many positive effects they bring to the environment and mental wellbeing.
A team from Doncaster Rovers have been cleaning rivers and riverbanks, Hull City’s representatives demonstrated how they have used boxes, plastic bottles and wooden spoons to bird boxes, bird feeders and hedgehog boxes, many in the garden of a local care home allowing the residents to have something to be proud of.
Huddersfield Town’s team took old shirts and turned them into bags, selling them to raise money which is donated to good causes, while the team representing Sheffield United’s foundation have reclaimed green space by weeding and restoring wooden boxes where flowers can be planted.
The result of the regional competition will be known in due course, but the day, organised by the Premier League – who brought the genuine Premier League trophy with them – and their PLCF team in association with ourselves, will live long in the memory.
It may just have have given you an idea or two for the summer holidays too.
