Moving to a new home for what started as a session of Walking Football has opened new opportunities for participants in our Parkinson’s Football sessions.
The programme began in the homely surroundings of Grangefield Community Centre but when we meet for a catch-up, it’s at Thornaby Pavilion.
Not only is the playing area a whole lot bigger, but the other side of a dividing curtain are three courts set up for pickleball and badminton.
The day we meet is the hottest day of the year, too hot for badminton or pickleball, which is a bit like paddle, the fastest growing sport in the country.
“It’s a warm one today, but we’ll be ok with football,” says Richie, one of the original participants. And no, before you ask, it’s not a Sunderland top he’s wearing, it’s Athletic Bilbao.
We’re at the mid-point of a 12-week programme and Richie, who is involved with North East Parkies United, a group based in Sunderland who welcome players from all over and play against other teams who have players playing with Parkinson’s.
“These sessions are really good, they do make a difference. You can see there are different levels of Parkinson’s among the people today, but we just make the best of it. We encourage each other.”
At the end of the session, shortened today because of the heat, everyone heads for the cafeteria, where conversation continues. There’s no agenda, just support, encouragement, and, “looking forward to it” in response to, “see you next week,” when, heat permitting, pickleball and badminton will be back on the menu.
