Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation has a new head of trustees.

John Baker has been on the board of trustees at the Foundation for 12 years, four of those as chair. He’s stepped down a proud man and has been replaced by Professor Mark Simpson, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice Chancellor designate of Teesside University, a role he will take up on September 1st.

“Having worked with the club through my previous university role to actually be involved in the Foundation and take over the Chair is a real privilege and a real honour,” says a man who is a Boro fan and a huge advocate for Teesside.

“I think my role is really to ensure that we've got clear vision, we've got a strategy and we know what the purpose of the Foundation is. I think that's first and foremost in my mind as to why I would get involved.”

Mark takes over at a time of growth for the Foundation, with two brand new facilities currently under construction in Middlesbrough and Loftus.

“Financially, the Foundation is in a good place,” he acknowledges, “it's well thought of, it's got a very, very good reputation both nationally and locally and within Foundations themselves.”

In welcoming Mark to the business, Head of Foundation Charlotte Dinsdale says: “Mark brings a wealth of experience and a genuine passion for both the area and the work we do. He is highly respected and brings real credibility, and we’re delighted to have him join the team. I’m really looking forward to working with him and learning from the knowledge he brings.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank John for everything he has done for the Foundation. His support has meant a great deal to me personally, and his guidance and insight have played a big part in shaping where the Foundation is today. We’re incredibly grateful for his contribution.”

In response, John comments: “From a personal point of view, it has been a privilege to serve as a Trustee and Chair of the Foundation and work with such a dedicated group of colleagues whose efforts are reflected in the positive difference it continues to make in the lives of so many people in the Teesside area. I've enjoyed the experience immensely.

“I leave knowing that the Foundation is in a really good place and I am delighted that Mark is taking over as Chair. His extensive experience in so many fields will provide excellent leadership for the Foundation.”
