It’s not that often that we talk about one of our own, But we will here and make no excuses for doing it.
Paul Murphy is typical of the Foundation staff, in that he cares deeply about the communities of Teesside and over the next few days he’s going to an extreme length to prove the point.
Paul, the foundation’s fundraising and events manager, is preparing to take on an extraordinary endurance challenge to raise vital funds for the charity’s work across Teesside.
He will attempt to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge between 17 and 21 June by climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon.
That’s been done before, but not many have cycled between them all before climbing.
Unlike the traditional challenge, Paul will cycle between each mountain rather than travelling by car, adding a significant extra test of endurance to an already demanding feat.
The challenge will see Paul travel through Scotland, England and Wales, combining hundreds of miles in the saddle with three major mountain ascents in support of Middlesbrough FC Foundation.
As Fundraising and Events Manager, Paul sees first-hand the impact the Foundation has on communities across Teesside through programmes focused on education, health, employability and social inclusion.
A modest man, Paul says: “I’m incredibly proud to work for Middlesbrough FC Foundation and to see the difference it makes to people across Teesside every day.
“This challenge is about pushing myself well outside of my comfort zone to support a cause I care deeply about. Cycling 500 miles and climbing the UK’s three highest mountains will be one of the toughest things I’ve ever done, but knowing the money raised will help support local people and communities will keep me going.”
