Dementia Action And Local History Combine For A Memorable Afternoon

Take a portion of Dementia Awareness Week, add a liberal dash of Local History Month and combine it together with MFC Foundation and you have a mix for a memorable afternoon in Middlesbrough.

This week is Dementia Awareness Week, a national campaign supported locally by our friends at Dementia Action Teesside. It is also Local History Month, another national initiative, this one aimed at celebrating culture and community across the country.

The afternoon complimented the regular work we do, backed by the Premier League Fans Fund, with those living with dementia in the Teesside area.

Beginning in the media suite, participants had a close look at some Boro memorabilia which included a contract signed by Boro and England legend Alan Peacock, together with his first international cap. These were on display alongside a Boro shirt, match programmes, pennants from the Carling Cup final against Bolton, three UEFA Cup games and press cuttings.

Those who were able then went on a guided walk of just over two miles around old Middlesbrough, taking in the three-faced clock tower near the old dock, the old foundry wall,  Transporter Bridge and other sights in the area around which Middlesbrough grew.

The afternoon concluded with a quick look behind the scenes back at the Riverside, including a peek into the changing rooms, a walk through the players tunnel and on to the side of the pitch.
