It was a day where memories and emotions were never far from the surface.

Every one of the 300-plus walkers who took part in the Alan Peacock Walk – Boro Remembers event had a story, and by the end, they all had a smile.

All age groups were represented and plenty of canine companions too, raising money for Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation and Dementia Action Teesside.

The route was around 2 miles starting at the Ayresome Park gates and ending with a lap of the Riverside pitch via the players’ tunnel. Walkers also had the opportunity to sit in seats of lost loved ones to spend some additional time remembering the person they were walking for.

People weren’t walking just in memory of a Boro great and England international, they were walking for people close to their hearts, for personal reasons.

Alan’s daughter, Diane, cut the ribbon at the start, following a lively and entertaining warm-up session led by Karen Winspear from Senses Wellbeing in Skelton. For a long time Alan was a regular member of the team at our monthly dementia dances, held in association with Dementia Action Teesside and this walk raised funds for ourselves and them.

The event was sponsored by Cygnet Law, Friends of the Foundation and long term supporters of Dementia Action. We thank them for their continued and kind support.

Participants received a memory tag, on which they wrote a message and tied it to the Ayresome Park Gates. They also received a “I’m walking for…” card to pin to their clothing during the walk and at the end, a thank you card to display at home with a message from Diane.

Next year’s walk will be on Sunday 27 September 2026. Save the date.
