The Alan Peacock: Boro Remembers Walk, named in memory of the former Boro and England forward who lived with dementia in the later years of his life, saw participants complete a 3.5km circular route, raising money to support the health programmes of Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation and the work of Dementia Action Teesside.
The Foundation and Dementia Action Teesside work closely to collaborate on monthly dementia dances in the Legends Lounge. Following his diagnosis, Alan Peacock was a regular at these discos and would often be seen up on his feet enjoying the space while chatting to friends, staff and volunteers.
A moving and emotive event, participants were given a chest piece and memory tag to write the name of the person they were walking for. The names of loved ones were then proudly displayed on t-shirts throughout the walk, with the memory tags tied to the Ayresome Park Gates, creating a powerful reminder of the number of lives impacted by dementia.
The walk itself was started by Alan’s daughter Diane, who cut the ribbon in the middle of the Ayresome Park Gates to commence proceedings. Participants took in the sights of the Transporter Bridge, the Old Town Hall and Middlehaven Dock before returning to the Riverside Stadium to complete a pitchside lap.
